DHS Expands List of STEM Degree Programs

On May 11th, The Department of Homeland Security announced an expansion of science, technology, engineering and math (“STEM”) designated-degree programs that allow qualified graduates in F-1 student status to apply for an optional practical training (“OPT”) extension.
The OPT program authorizes international students who graduate from colleges and universities in the U.S. to remain in the country and receive work-related training for up to 12 months.  Those individuals who graduate from a designated STEM degree program can remain in the U.S. for an additional period of 17 months on an OPT STEM extension.  To view a complete list of STEM degrees click here.
The expansion includes fields such as pharmaceutical sciences, econometrics and quantitative economics.  “Attracting the best and brightest international talent to our colleges and universities and enabling them to contribute their professional growth is an important part of our nation’s economic, scientific and technological competitiveness” Secretary of Homeland Security, Janet Napolitano stated.
