How to De-Stress your Holiday Border Crossing

Peace Bridge, Buffalo, NY

Peace Bridge, Buffalo, NY

CBP in Buffalo, NY has issued a comprehensive news release with excellent information on dealing with busy holiday border traffic along the U.S./Southern Ontario border.  Busy border traffic is expected to begin the day before Thanksgiving and continue throughout December as the holiday season gears up.
Here are some of the tips offered:

  • Check traffic conditions at the four border crossing within the Buffalo/Niagara region and select the least congested of the four as your point of entry.  The Niagara Falls Bridge Commission website provides updated wait times for all four major crossings. CBP has an excellent Border Wait Time page that shows the estimated wait times for reaching the primary inspection booth, the first point of contact with CBP when crossing the Canada/U.S. and Mexico/U.S. land borders.
  • Know what documents you need.  A complete list of documents is provided by clicking here.
  • Use radio frequency enabled identification documents when possible. These documents expedite entry and make crossing the border more efficient.  We especially recommend the NEXUS program for eligible travelers.
  • CBP also reminds Lawful Permanent Residents that your green card (Form I-551) is acceptable for both land and sea travel into the U.S.
