Customs and Border Protection (CBP) is piloting a project at the International Bridge in Sault Ste. Marie designed to reduce wait times. If successful, we can expect the procedures to be implemented at other ports-of-entries.
CBP theorizes that more travelers can be processed per hour by reducing the amount of time it takes each vehicle to get to the inspection booth. By saving a few seconds per vehicle, overall wait times should be reduced for each traveler. Click here to view a short video on Border Crossing 101.
A two-stop sign process will be implemented. Travelers will be required to stop at the first sign and as the vehicle ahead of them clears, they will move ahead to the next sign and present their identification to the RFID reader. Once the inspection booth is clear, they can proceed ahead. CBP Officers will direct traffic periodically to assist travelers with this new process.
