The right to vote: Only U.S. citizens can vote in Federal elections. Most states also restrict the right to vote, in most elections, to U.S. citizens.
Ability to run for public office: U.S. citizens can hold many different public offices.
Unlimited travel: Green card holders are required to remain in the U.S. for at least six months out of the year. U.S. citizens are not subject to this requirement.
No deportation risks: U.S. citizens are not subject to deportation as green card holders are.
Ability to bring family members to the United States: Citizens generally get priority when petitioning to bring family members permanently to the U.S.
Obtaining citizenship for LPR children: When you naturalize, your children under 18 who are Lawful Permanent Residents automatically become U.S. citizens, too.
Obtaining citizenship for children born abroad: In most cases, a child born abroad to a U.S. citizen is automatically a U.S. citizen.
Become a U.S. passport holder: Only U.S. citizens can get U.S. passports, a coveted travel document. When you travel abroad with a U.S. passport, you’ll be supported by U.S. Embassies or Consulates if you need any assistance.
Become eligible for federal jobs: Most jobs with the federal government require U.S. citizenship.
Financial aid: Many financial aid grants, including college scholarships and funds given by the government for specific purposes, are available only to U.S. citizens.
Social Security benefits: U.S. citizens receive full Social Security benefits, whereas Lawful Permanent Residents usually receive only half of their benefits.
Estate Tax benefits: U.S. citizens may be subject to fewer restrictions on estate taxes and may be eligible for more tax exemptions than green card holders.
