USCIS has published a 2-page flyer (Form M-767) that outlines an individual's rights and responsibilites upon becoming a U.S. Citizen.  In addition, the flyer provides useful information regarding your "next steps" and answers questions regarding applying for a passport, updating your social security record, registering to vote, obtaining a certificate of citizenship for your child and how to sponsor family members to come to the United States.  Form M-767 can be viewed by clicking here.

Some of your rights include:

  • Freedom to express yourself
  • Freedom to worship as you wish
  • Right to a prompt, fair trial by jury
  • Right to vote in elections for public officials
  • Right to apply for federal employment
  • Right to run for elected office
  • Freedome to pursue, "life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness."

Some of your responsibilities include:

  • Supporting and defending the Constitution
  • Staying informed of the issues affecting your community
  • Participating in the democratic process
  • Respecting and obeying federal, state and local laws
  • Respecting the rights, beliefs and opinions of others
  • Participating in your local community
  • Paying income and other taxes honestly, and on time
  • Serving on a jury when called upon
  • Defending the country should the need arise
